Accessibility at Urban Nature Action CIC

Urban Nature Action CIC wants nature, wildlife and community activities to be welcoming and accessible to as many people as reasonably possible.

People have different bodies, minds, communication styles, experiences and support needs. We do not expect everybody to participate in exactly the same way.

Reasonable adjustments

If you need an adjustment to help you take part, please contact us.

Adjustments may include, depending on the activity:

  • seated participation;

  • additional rest breaks;

  • extra time;

  • written or step-by-step instructions;

  • demonstrations;

  • additional processing time;

  • quieter seating where available;

  • reducing unnecessary sensory demands;

  • allowing sensory aids such as ear defenders where safe;

  • adjusting a practical task;

  • providing assistance with part of an activity;

  • allowing a carer, personal assistant or support worker to attend; or

  • providing an alternative way to participate.

You do not normally need to give us a diagnosis. It is usually more useful to tell us what would help.

Service providers have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to anticipate barriers affecting disabled people and make reasonable adjustments.

Neurodivergent participants

Autistic, ADHD and otherwise neurodivergent participants are explicitly welcome at Urban Nature Action CIC activities.

Where reasonably possible, we aim to provide:

  • clear information about what will happen;

  • straightforward instructions;

  • written information as well as verbal information;

  • demonstrations;

  • opportunities for breaks;

  • additional processing time; and

  • flexibility in how people engage.

There is no requirement to make eye contact, speak in front of a group or participate socially in a particular way unless something is genuinely necessary for the activity.

Carers and support workers

Participants are welcome to attend with a carer, personal assistant or support worker where this is reasonably necessary.

Where that person attends solely to provide support, we will normally seek not to charge them an additional participation fee where Urban Nature Action CIC controls the price.

Please contact us before the activity so we can make appropriate arrangements.

Outdoor activities

Nature is magnificently bad at installing lifts. 🌳

Some of our wildlife activities may take place on:

  • uneven or muddy ground;

  • slopes;

  • woodland paths;

  • grassland;

  • unmade paths;

  • sites with gates or steps;

  • locations without accessible toilets; or

  • places where physical access cannot reasonably be altered.

We cannot guarantee that every outdoor activity will be accessible to every participant.

However, accessibility will still be considered when we plan activities.

Where reasonably possible, we will provide useful information in advance about things such as:

  • distance;

  • terrain;

  • gradients;

  • steps;

  • path surfaces;

  • gates;

  • seating and rest opportunities;

  • toilets;

  • parking or drop-off;

  • expected duration; and

  • other significant access limitations.

Where a particular location is unsuitable, we will consider alternative routes, activities or ways of participating where reasonably possible.

Indoor venues

When choosing community venues, we will consider accessibility alongside factors such as availability, location, cost and suitability.

We will seek venues with good accessibility wherever reasonably practicable.

Some community venues may nevertheless have limitations. Where we know about significant limitations, we will aim to tell participants before the activity.

Financial accessibility

We recognise that cost can prevent people from taking part.

Where funding and resources allow, Urban Nature Action CIC may provide:

  • free activities;

  • low-cost activities;

  • subsidised places;

  • funded places; or

  • community programmes supported by grants or sponsorship.

We cannot guarantee free or subsidised places for every activity.
