Why build nest boxes?

What happens during the workshop?

Natural nesting places are becoming harder for many birds to find. Renovated buildings, sealed roof spaces, fewer mature trees and tidier gardens can leave birds with fewer safe places to raise their young.

Nest boxes are becoming super important these days as they help make up for some of the natural spaces that have been lost due to modern living. By joining our workshops and building two bird boxes, you are not only helping nature where you live but also paying it forward to help nature throughout the community!

What to expect.

Each workshop combines practical building with wildlife learning. No previous woodworking experience is needed. All wood is pre-cut and pre-drilled in advance, allowing you to focus on assembling the box safely and confidently.

Boxes can be built individually with another one made to pay it forward to the community, they can be made in small groups depending on the age of participants, group size and available budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can children take part?

Yes, depending on the workshop and venue. Children must be appropriately supervised, either by an appropriate adult or school/group supervisor

Can we keep the finished boxes?

Yes. Workshops can be designed so participants take one of the boxes home, the other boxes will be used by Urban Nature Action CIC to help urban community nature.

Do I need woodworking experience?

No. The workshops are suitable for beginners, with prepared materials and step-by-step support.

Do you install the boxes?

Installation support may be available depending on the location, height, access requirements and type of box.

Can you run the workshop at our venue?

Yes, subject to space, access, tables, power and suitable safety arrangements.

How many people can attend?

Group size will depend on the venue, workshop format and number of available tools.

Are the boxes suitable for every property?

Not always. Different bird species need different box designs and locations. Swift boxes in particular require suitable buildings and installation positions.
